Warning: Watch For Absence Of Malice

Several years after Stanley Kubrick, movie director, and Arthur C. Clarke, author, combined efforts to bring Clarke’s 1950 short story, The Sentinel, to life 2001: A Space Odyssey burst into theatres across the world on April 3, 1968. Kubrick asked Lloyd’s of London to issue an insurance policy to protect him from losses should aliens be discovered before the movie’s release.

Lloyd’s declined, and the film opened unhindered by alien intruders. Although this movie was released over 30 years ago it continues to be one of the most heralded science fiction films of our past and current century. It’s demographic following ranges in ages from 65 to 19 years olds; most of who consider this movie as much more than entertainment. The movie depicts an encounter between man and HAL 9000, a super computer, with human like artificial intelligence.

The gist of the movie is that HAL 9000 evolves from this super computer to a form of uncontrollable artificial intelligence that is now no longer operating by what has been programmed into its system but starts making its own decisions. Since HAL has no “soul” or “conscience” its (his) morality is based upon calculations rather than reason. Here lies the premise for the lead into this year’s media hype. Both NBC and ABC have featured 2001: A Space Odyssey as a precursor to predict mankind’s uncontrollable quest to destroy civilization as we know it.

Both of these special reports included fact, truth, and a clever media spin on the dangers of the scientific community’s proliferation of artificial intelligence. They had interviews with “selected” experts from that noble profession eluding to the probable danger of creating artificial intelligence that will eventually be able to not only become like mankind but will be able to perform the act of creating itself through cloning.

Through careful manipulation and baiting by the reporters, they lead each of these scientists into using 2001: A Space Odyssey as a prophetic warning of mankind’s eventual extinction by his own creation of these “beings”. There is no malice intended by these journalists, so they are very comfortable in presenting entertainment as investigative reporting.

They may be sincere, but they are sincerely wrong. Those of us who are in that upper demographic range (55 +) have seen our communication devices evolve from a Corona portable typewriter to an IBM Selectric, to the Personal Computer now inter-linked with the World Wide Web. I have heard the media warn us about everything from “computers” replacing workers, resulting in wide spread unemployment, to the ultimate dangers of medications becoming so effective in eradicating disease that the earth would be become over populated by the year 2010.

The fact of the matter is -none of this has happened. In fact, in most cases, just the opposite has occurred. Just remember that when you are watching, reading, or hearing anything whose existence is based on the support of advertising dollars more than likely it's entertainment, not news. And certainly not information you would want to embrace for making life changing decisions.

If you will think back to the times you have been told or feared something “bad” was going to happen to you or those you love, this adage will have great meaning for you. “Worry and fear, based on what could happen, is interest paid in advance on a debt we will most likely never owe.”

A Lesson In American History

How in the world can a young Caucasian female from rural Oklahoma tell anyone the first thing about Black History Month? My approach is to simply offer my own perspective since that’s how most people view the world. I would be foolish to even imply that I realized the full extent slavery had on African Americans, and I would never claim to understand the persecution with which they have had to endure.

I will, however, say that had it not been for our African American counterparts, our lives would be minus many of the wonderful things to which we have become accustomed. As I sat eating ice cream with my beautiful little girl, I had to say thanks to Augustus Jackson the guy who invented it. The last time my husband took us fishing we used automatic fishing reels invented by a man named George Cook, and everyday when I sit down at my computer to work, I have to remember Burridge & Marshman, the people responsible for the invention of the typewriter. Yes, each of these people was of African American decent.

Where would we be without the smooth sounds from a guy named Louis Armstrong, or the comic innovations of Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby? Thanks to people like Harriet Tubman, who fought against slavery, we have people like Oprah Winfrey and Bryant Gumble among other great speakers and educators. Thanks to people like Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in professional sports, we are able to enjoy the talents of people such as Sherryl Swoopes, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods.

Of course, I can't realize the true sacrifice that African Americans have made to accomplish so many wonderful things, but I can say thanks! Thanks for adding beauty, talent, and knowledge to our every day lives, and thanks for helping to shape the world that we live in! New And Improved, No Really Well, we're here. We talked and talked and talked, and then finally walked. Literally. FullNet Communications is officially in our new offices and new data center. Last month when I was mentioning the move I had several people asking me what it meant to them. Well, here are four distinct ways that you will benefit from this move:

  1. We are now officially offering 24x7 customer service. You can call us on any day, at any time, and someone will be there. If you are unable to get a live person (who is on another call), leave a message and someone will call you back, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  2. We have a new and improved phone system. We are still learning the ins and outs of this new system, but one of the things it will do for us is allow us to look at when we have the highest call volumes and adjust our customer service staffing to cover that. As we do this, you will find that you will more and more often reach a live person and not have to leave a voicemail message.

  3. We are in the process of increasing our bandwidth and redundancy. There is still some equipment over at the old offices that we are arranging to bring to our new office, and when we do, we will have fully redundant circuits to the internet. This could result in increased speed for surfing and faster downloads. (This final move will take place sometime during the next two to six weeks. We will notify you of any downtime that might affect you before we move.)
