February News
Today is:

Ever have one of those of months?

You know the kind of month I am talking about. The car breaks down, the latch on the door on the microwave oven above your stove breaks and the Ice Maker in your two year old refrigerator stops working. Okay, my car didn’t break down but the Microwave and Refrigerator abandoned me in the same week!

The biggest problem with living in the middle of nowhere, like I do, is “The Service Call.” Most companies want $60.00 or more just to come see what is wrong not to mention the parts and labor to fix it.

I opened the door of the microwave to see that just one of the two plastic tabs that latch and hold the door closed when micro-waving was broken. Armed with the model number and knowing that it was a Kenmore I went to the Sears site and found the microwave and the part.

5 days later and $17.00 dollars poorer my Microwave was back on line offering me Kettle Korn when watching a movie.

Now for the refrigerator. I looked in and noticed that the front of the ice maker snapped off revealing a part #. Back to the trusty Internet I went and found.

Total cost with shipping $87.00 which is only $27.00 more than just a service call and my Ice maker was back!

I am sure you are glad to know that the annual Super Bowl Party at my place will include fresh hot popcorn and ice as the Internet helped me fix both problems. Well maybe you don’t care that much about the party but trust me Brian and Beverly are glad I used the Internet for my appliance troubles.

Enthusiastically,

Free Translations & Currency Conversions…

Looking for a quick and simple translation of a word or phrase, then check out http://www.freetranslation.com where you can copy and paste a Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese or Russian word or phrase into one field and the English translation appears almost instantly in another.

It also works the other way: the site translates English into one of 10 different languages, including two forms of Chinese (though for this, you'd probably need to install what's called a "language pack" so your PC can display the characters). Don't push things too far; longer passages quickly reveal the program's limitations, so if your text is going to end up in a business letter, you might want to put a human translator on the case. The site will provide one, for a fee.

While you are there, be sure and take a look at their free Currency Converter that allows you to convert any two currencies. This is the place if you want to know how much one U.S. dollar is in Russian Rubles or Zimbabwe Dollars. (28 Russian Rubles or 97,632 Zimbabwe Dollars!)

Don’t be Alarmed it is just ZONE ALARM!

As you are aware we have been reviewing the three most popular security programs and are now down to the last (but certainly not least). Introducing ZoneAlarm!

ZoneAlarm does offer different packages that you can purchase at varying price ranges, but they also have a free version that will cost you nothing! That’s right; ZoneAlarm is free for individuals and not-for-profit charitable entities (excluding governmental entities and educational institutions).

The key feature to the basic free version would be an easy-to-use firewall that blocks hackers and other unknown threats. It systematically identifies hackers and blocks access attempts and automatically makes your computer invisible while you surf the net. There are not many options in the basic package, but it will protect you from unwanted troubles on the Internet! This is one of the easiest firewalls that we have tested. Straight to the point - protect or not to protect!

For a nominal fee, ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite offers a bit more. You can even save $10 by ordering on line. What they offer is:

Triple Defense Firewall (NEW)

Goes beyond traditional PC firewalls to protect your entire PC from hackers, spyware, and other Internet threats! The boast is that it blocks hackers from gaining access to your computer, automatically makes your computer invisible to anyone on the Internet, and prevents spyware from sending your personal information across the Internet.

Integrated Anti-Spyware and Antivirus (NEW)

It claims to update, scan, and remove spyware, viruses, and worms in a single, powerful operation. ZoneAlarm automatically removes the most dangerous and useless spyware and viruses for you and "Clears" legitimate monitoring software (such as cookies for Web sites you use frequently) so it doesn't get picked up in every spyware scan.

Smartdefense Service (NEW)

SmartDefense Advisor automatically adjusts your security settings for maximum protection against the latest virus and spyware outbreaks. It keeps your PC security updated from the latest spyware and malware using information supplied by the ZoneAlarm user community.

Advanced Identity and Privacy Protection

Prevents your personal data from leaving your computer without your approval and automatically stops pop-up ads so you can surf in peace. See how it all works by going to: http://www.zonelabs.com

ZoneAlarm offers IM protection, parental control and even wireless PC protection as well as other options and you can view at Zone Labs . Whether you choose Norton’s, McAfee’s, ZoneAlarm, or any one of the many others … just remember to click your mouse three times and say “there’s no place like a safe home page!” We hope this has been helpful.

Safe Surfing!
