There's No Need to Fear...
Knoppix is here! For some reason your computer will not allow Windows to boot. All you get is the "blue screen of death," or an endless loop trying to install Windows or proclaiming an error. The bottom line is that you should probably use your manufacturer's restoration disks but you have some data on the hard drive you want to keep like pictures or financial information. KNOPPIX is the answer!
KNOPPIX is a bootable Live system on CD or DVD, consisting of a representative collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a productive Linux system for the desktop, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it (over 8GB on the DVD "Maxi" edition).
Just go to knoppix.org, pick your language, and then download the free software image from the mirror site of your choice. Once you have the image you can burn a bootable CD and recover your data before you reinstall your operating system. I have never been so glad to see a fat little penguin in my life. :)
Next month some help on burning an iso image if you don't already know how.

As the new school year begins you may be reminded of committees deciding where education dollars go and then hearing that our school children and teachers are suffering with less and less? Here is a wonderful way to bypass the middle man! There is a site that empowers the teachers by allowing them to ask for help with specific needs and empowers people worldwide to choose what they will fund or not. Go to donorschoose.org and you can make a direct difference or ask for direct help.
It's simple really; teachers can ask for specific classroom needs, you choose a project to bring to life and students learn and thank you with letters and pictures. DonorsChoose.org is a way to provide students in need with resources that our public schools often lack. At this non-profit web site, teachers submit project proposals for materials or experiences their students need to learn. These ideas become classroom reality when concerned individuals, called citizen philanthropists, choose projects to fund.
You can choose to donate just a dollar or any amount you want. You can choose specific projects, grade levels, towns and states or look across the U.S. If you don't want to donate then tell your child's teacher about the site so they can use it! It makes a huge difference!
As of the 25th of August this year in Oklahoma alone over $179,000 has been donated to 16,687 Oklahoma students, from donors across 45 states. This generosity has encouraged 840 teachers in 302 public schools to submit 1,152 project proposals for their students. Most of these students come from low income communities that would have lost precious educational opportunities for lack of funding. And, by the way, of these materials, 88% are re-used by next year's students.
As this school year begins ... you choose!
