Stolen Credit Card

My Mother passed away on March 20th her 80th birthday so I have been out of sorts for the past couple of weeks. I stayed at her house for a few days to start the process of cleaning up and while I was there I tried to keep up with my finances as usual by logging into my bank account and my only credit card account, which I pay off each month.

While logged into the credit card site a pop-up asked me to verify the information they had filled in on my account. Now remember I am on the credit card site and they are asking me to verify the info that was essentially all correct. After all the information and at the very bottom of the pop-up was a place to enter the 3 digit code from the back of my credit card. I had a twinge of perhaps I shouldn't but what the heck it was on their site right? WRONG, the next day I had a charge for $401.50 for a Goochie bag in another state!

Moral of the story. Even when you are on your credit card site cookies and spyware can trick you into thinking the requests are from the credit card company. Don't give them any information until you call first and ask if the pop-up is real.

Let's be careful out there!

The DailyLit

You can never again use the excuse that you're in front of the computer too much to read a good book. DailyLit.com solves that problem. Visit the site, sign up, find a book you want to read, and start receiving the tome in easily readable chunks every day, every other day, or just once a week via e-mail or RSS.

The majority of the titles are free, public-domain classics (think Dickens and Twain), but there's also several new books both free and paid. It might take a few years to read War and Peace this way, since it's delivered in 675 discrete parts, but at least you're reading.

Site'-ings of Savings

Do much shopping on line? Many do. As you know everyone has an online presence these days. But what you may not know is that online stores send out discount codes to SELECT groups of customers, leaving the rest of us to pay full price! To that I say, "NO!"

In my never ending quest to add power to my pocket book I discovered NaughtyCodes.com, a site that proclaims "Its fun to be naughty!" Providing such codes in one convenient location at NaughtyCodes.com. They find and list ALL of the coupon codes and promotional codes that can be found. If it's out there, they have it!

PromotionalCodes.com is another site dedicated exclusively to helping you save money while you shop. They feature thousands of coupons and promotional codes from the most popular merchants around. You can browse through various steals and deals, read descriptions of merchants, and even help fellow shoppers by uploading a coupon code of your own. PromotionalCodes.com is just one more example of places on line trying to help you shop smarter. FatWallet.com is a growing presence that began simply as one page listing coupons for a handful of retailers. With the addition of a Hot Deals forum, FatWallet.com became a community of savvy shoppers. As this community grew, it became apparent that the members are the pulse of not only FatWallet.com but also the evolving marketplace.

If you want to expand to even off line savings traded on line then you'll have to check out U-Exchange.com where both visitors and members are able to browse trades. You can search any country, state (U.S.) or province (Can.) or you can be more precise by using their keyword search. They also provide a map location button at the top of each category and you can even call them at 1-877-586-6619.

And you have to try the latest addition to my list budget builders ... get your groupons by going to groupon.thepoint.com. This is a site that grows savings by getting more participation ... which in turn generates more savings etc. It is limited in location participation but also has side links to all sorts of discounts and coupons. Its groups sharing in coupons ...Groupons!
