A Penny Earned is a Penny Saved!
When I was a kid in Nowata Oklahoma we used to make the occasional trip to Coffeyville Kansas to a cattle auction. I always liked the high energy action but didn't realize how much money was trading hands on one Saturday morning. I wasn't sure if you were aware there are regular auctions and online auctions sponsored by our State and Federal Governments.
Buy new, seized, and surplus merchandise and real estate from the government. Some items sold online by auction or fixed price. Others available by public auction, sealed bid, or contact with a Realtor
Public auctions open to the General Public are held on the second (2nd) Friday of each month. The auction starts at 10:00 a.m. Registration is from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Any state, county, or city agencies plus most non-profit entities can buy items through the entire month EXCEPT from Wednesday through Friday of the auction week.
Let's save money out there!

Cash For Clunkers
In case you haven't heard already - the government is offering to buy your car. Not an actual buy out mind you - a credit that participating dealers are required to pass along to you on the purchase of a new car. For all the details you can go to cars.gov.
In a nut shell the idea is to promote people getting rid of their older gas guzzling automobiles in exchange for newer fuel efficient ones. The way it works is that the dealer gets $3,500 - $4,500 from the U.S. Government which they must give you in the form of a discount taken off the top of the price of a new car. They, in turn, must destroy the old car - it cannot be recycled into their used car lots. (Sorry, the politically correct term would be "pre-owned vehicles".)
There are limitations and guidelines to follow, of course, and the commercials may not cover these:
- Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date
- Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify
- Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)
- Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in
- You don't need a voucher, dealers will apply a credit at purchase
- Program runs through Nov 1, 2009 or when the funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.
- The program requires the scrapping of your eligible trade-in vehicle, and that the dealer discloses to you an estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in. The scrap value, however minimal, will be in addition to the rebate, and not in place of the rebate.
You can also call the Department of Transportation hot line at 1-866-CAR-7891 (1-866-227-7891). You may, however, want to act quickly - as with so many other new government programs from stimulus measures this one has already run way over budget and may have to shut down before the November end date originally set.
